Whitechapel, Recasted: A Residency in Metal, Memory, and Making

Name

Jia Qi Chan

Institution

The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL

"A collaborative artist residency reimagines London Whitechapel's bell foundry into living, working, and exhibiting spaces - supporting metal-based practices through adaptive architecture, spatial equity, shared resources, and long-term cultural stewardship. The project repurposes the historic Whitechapel Bell Foundry and adds a new-build extension to create a metal-focused residency, addressing urgent needs for accommodation, exhibition, and workspace among transient artists, while honouring the site's legacy of metal craftsmanship.

Evolving the foundry into one of the future, reopened foundry welcomes emerging or less financially established artists to experiment and engage with metal as an art medium, while shared tools, materials, and workspace help alleviate the financial barriers that often limit access to this craft.

The residency model is multi-layered: long-term studios nurture developing practices, while short-term residencies align with public exhibition cycles. Artists contribute to fortnightly workshops open to schools and local communities - ensuring the foundry's revival supports both creative and civic life within Whitechapel."
