Where the Shore gives Way: A river research station in Penang, Malaysia

Name

Sarah Chuwa

Institution

University of Cambridge

"Positioned directly on the Keluang River in Penang's southern industrial zone, this project is a first response to Penang's urgent coastal and river pollution crisis. Decades of unchecked land reclamation and industrial discharge have choked the river and its surrounding communities, yet state priorities remain fixed on tourism and coastal redevelopment; the very activities accelerating the damage.

This building provides independent environmental organisations with a permanent base directly on the river, purpose-built for monitoring the river and tackling pollution head on.

The station operates on two fronts: a three-floor research building providing wet laboratories, documentation spaces and a sealed research chamber for long-term monitoring, and a river interceptor system that actively captures debris and pollution flowing through the river.

Together, they form a permanent infrastructure to intervene and advocate for the future of Penang's rivers and the communities that depend on them."
