The Channel
Name
Yu Shan
Institution
Singapore Polytechnic
"Recognising that engineering pedagogy is an active, rhythmic journey, the Channel acts as a physical manifestation of the transition from abstract theory to tactile application.
The design adopts a rigorous programmatic sequence that mirrors the engineering curriculum. By orchestrating student movement through a ""channel"" of successive environments—ranging from formal classroom lessons, to flexible self-directed learning spaces, to fabrication labs—the architecture facilitates a seamless shift between cognitive and hands-on learning. Interstitial ""transitional zones"" are strategically reclaimed as informal outdoor study spaces with lush greenery, providing the vibrant, social atmosphere essential for developing the interpersonal ""soft skills"" required in modern industry.
The project's namesake, The Channel, extends beyond human circulation into the realm of bioclimatic design. Guided by FORMA analysis, the building's massing is optimized to intercept high-altitude winds, incident at perpendicular angles.
To harness this kinetic energy, a Venturi Capping system is integrated at the perimeters. By compressing airflow through a constricted space, the design leverages the Venturi Effect to accelerate wind speeds and significantly lower local pressure. This pressure differential induces a consistent, natural breeze throughout the learning spaces below."
