SDC 2026 THE FLOW OF BRONZE-MEMORIES OF NGU XA
Name
Dang Ngoc Tram
Institution
Hanoi Architectural University
"The Flow of Bronze – Memories of Ngũ Xã explores how architecture can preserve and reactivate cultural heritage beyond the display of historical artifacts. Rather than reconstructing bronze casting as a static museum collection, the project transforms the knowledge, materials, and processes of Ngũ Xã bronze casting into a contemporary spatial experience.
The project aims to safeguard Ngũ Xã bronze casting—one of the most renowned traditional crafts of Thăng Long—while reconnecting this heritage with contemporary urban life. Its design methodology is rooted in the study of the traditional casting process, where earthen molds, molten metal, and cooling water are essential elements in creating the final product. These principles are translated into architectural language through layered spatial sequences, interwoven voids, and continuous circulation routes. Topography, water, and light are carefully orchestrated as experiential elements, guiding visitors through a journey from raw material to finished artifact while reflecting the preservation, transformation, and transmission of cultural values across generations.
Located at No. 1 Trấn Vũ, adjacent to Trúc Bạch Lake and the historic Ngũ Xã neighborhood, the project establishes a direct connection to the birthplace of Thăng Long's bronze-casting tradition. More than a museum, it serves as a space for education, cultural experience, and community engagement.
The project conveys a simple yet meaningful message: heritage should not be preserved merely as a memory of the past, but reinterpreted as a living process that continues to inspire future generations."
