SARNA SIBIL: A MUSEUM FOR TRIBAL COMMUNITIES OF JHARKHAND
Name
Aryan Mankar
Institution
Birla Institute of Technology
"SARNA SIBIL reimagines the museum as an immersive cultural institution that interprets Jharkhand's tribal heritage through architecture. The project is driven by the concept of Crown Shyness, where the separation between tree canopies inspires a roof system that modulates daylight while enhancing spatial experience. The resulting interplay of light and shadow creates a calm, contemplative atmosphere rooted in the tribal values of harmony and coexistence.
The planning follows a radial grid organized around a central atrium that functions as the primary circulation and orientation space. This geometry establishes clear movement patterns, strengthens visual connections, and creates a balanced hierarchy of public and semi-private zones. The façade celebrates local craftsmanship through the integration of Sohrai art and Dokra-inspired detailing, allowing traditional art forms to become intrinsic architectural elements rather than decorative additions.
Environmental responsiveness is embedded throughout the design through passive daylighting, natural ventilation, and façade shading strategies. SARNA SIBIL demonstrates how architecture can preserve intangible cultural heritage while responding to contemporary environmental challenges. The project ultimately seeks to inspire viewers to see museums not merely as repositories of history, but as living spaces that sustain identity, knowledge, and cultural continuity."
