ROOFS MATCHING: A PROPOSAL TO TRANSFORM ABANDONED SMALL VILLAGE SCHOOL INTO COMMUNITY CENTER OF ETH

Name

Phuc Le Vo Hong (Smith)

Institution

University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City

"""Roofs Matching"" is a proposal to transform abandoned rural schools in Vietnam's Central Highlands into community learning and cultural spaces. As education systems evolve, many small village schools are left unused, yet they continue to hold memories and meaning for local communities.

Rather than demolishing these buildings, the project explores how they can be adapted and given a new purpose. Existing structures are preserved where possible, while new interventions draw inspiration from local architecture, craftsmanship, and cultural identity. The renewed spaces support learning, cultural exchange, creative activities, and community gatherings.

More than a physical transformation, Roofs Matching is about reconnecting people with place, heritage, and one another. It invites viewers to see architecture not as a finished object, but as an evolving process that respects the past while creating opportunities for the future."
