Reverence: Designing the Sacred in the Age of AI
Name
Olivier Sujun Morel
Institution
Temasek Polytechnic
"As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into creative practice, questions of authorship, creativity, and the role of designers have become increasingly pressing. Entering the field at a time when AI can generate forms, images, and narratives within seconds, I became curious about what remains uniquely human in the design of space.
Reverence explores this through the design of a church. Inspired by the fluidity and rhythms of life, the flowing form creates a spatial journey that encourages intimacy, reflection, and connection. The church serves as a testing ground for examining whether qualities such as introspection, belonging, and spiritual reflection can emerge from algorithmically generated design, or whether they remain rooted in lived human experience.
Throughout the project, AI was used as a tool for speculation, storytelling, and atmospheric exploration. While it rapidly generated forms and visual narratives, its greatest value emerged in testing moods, qualities of light, and spatial experiences. These explorations revealed both the potential and limitations of AI, highlighting the importance of human judgement in shaping meaningful architecture.
Reverence invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between architects and AI, and to consider whether the most meaningful aspects of architecture can ever be generated by a machine."
