Requiem for the Departed: An Architecture of Remembrance, Release, and Return

Name

Alicia Lim

Institution

LASALLE College of the Arts

Requiem for the Departed is a speculative funerary architecture that challenges how death is managed within the contemporary city. As urban systems increasingly conceal, standardise, and optimise death, the project asks how architecture might restore ritual, reflection, and human connection to the experience of loss.

Inspired by Arvo Pärt's Fratres, the architecture unfolds as a sequence of spaces that guide both the bereaved and the deceased through parallel journeys. Through shifts in datum, materiality, light, and spatial compression, visitors encounter moments of descent, resistance, release, and return. Water structures the journey, creating changing conditions of immersion and emergence that transform movement into a physical experience of mortality.

Rather than treating death as a hidden logistical process, the project positions it as an experience worthy of contemplation and collective remembrance. By making visible what the city often seeks to conceal, Requiem for the Departed invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with mortality and recognise death not as an endpoint, but as part of a larger cycle of memory, ritual, and renewal.
