Living Pa Chai Len: Nurturing ป่าชายเลน

Name

Michael Widya, Bhone Pyae

Institution

Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts

"Bang Khun Thian, Thakam, situated along the Gulf of Thailand, has been facing a serious coastal degradation crisis. The lack of protection against coastal erosion has resulted in significant losses, affecting communities from the local to the regional scale. It is reported that this issue is largely driven by aquafarm, which has been the core of the area's socio-economic activity.

Living Pa Chai Len, reimagining a new system that nurtures and restores mangroves into areas currently dominated by aquafarm, taking this as an opportunity to expand and restore the wetland ecosystem that has been lost because of the unsustainable practices.

Through a community-based approach, grounded by an education hub and visitor centre for Bang Khun Thian, this project enhances local visibility, identity, and culture. As it serves to be the landmark of the region, it also acts as a catalyst for regenerative and low-carbon living."
