How Spatial Hierarchy Fosters Bonds: Artistry Across Ages

Name

Khadhijah Sayeed

Institution

Nanyang Polytechnic

"How Spatial Hierarchy Fosters Bonds explores how architecture can encourage social interaction and intergenerational connection through spatial hierarchy. Inspired by the structure and organisation of the Polyrhachis Dives ant nest, the project reimagines NYP Block P1 as ""Timeless Maker"", a community learning hub centred around craft, creativity, and shared experiences.

The project organises workshops, studios, lounges, and exhibition spaces into layered vertical and horizontal zones that vary in openness, exposure, and intimacy. Rather than forcing interaction, the design creates opportunities for curiosity and gradual social connection through overlapping circulation paths, visual connections, and different levels of collaboration spaces. As users move through the building, they become more familiar with one another, encouraging spontaneous conversations and stronger community bonds.

Regenerative strategies such as natural lighting, greenery, sustainable materials, and water and energy harvesting are integrated into the project to strengthen the relationship between people, craft, and nature. Ultimately, the project explores how spatial organisation can shape behaviour, foster belonging, and create meaningful shared experiences across generations."
