"Architecture cannot compel gratitude, but it can cultivate the conditions in which gratitude may emerge.
In contemporary cities characterised by speed, productivity, and constant distraction, moments of pause have become increasingly rare. Yet gratitude often begins in these moments of stillness—when one is able to step back from the self and become aware of one's relationship with others, nature, and the larger world.
Situated on a site with an existing Taoist temple, Ganji explores how architecture might encourage such moments of reflection. Rather than treating modernisation and tradition as opposing forces, the project draws from the Taoist principle of yin and yang, embracing duality as a framework for coexistence. Sacred and everyday programmes, solitude and gathering, enclosure and openness are carefully interwoven throughout the project.
Spaces of retreat are introduced to offer respite from the distractions of daily life, creating intimate environments for contemplation and mindfulness. In contrast, moments of spatial grandeur—through framed light, expansive landscapes, and ascending journeys—seek to evoke humility and awe, reminding visitors that life extends beyond the individual.
Ganji ultimately invites visitors to slow down, reflect, and rediscover their place within a larger, interconnected world."
