BLOOM: Biodiversity Learning Hub
Name
Htoo Myat Aung
Institution
Nanyang Polytechnic
"BLOOM is a regenerative adaptive-reuse proposal that reimagines an underutilised campus building as a Biodiversity Learning Hub. The project seeks to transform architecture from a static educational facility into a living ecosystem where learning, ecological restoration, and community interaction coexist.
Drawing inspiration from natural systems, the design introduces vertical farms, butterfly gardens, community gardening spaces, educational exhibition areas, and a farm-to-table workshop program. Existing architectural structures are retained and enhanced through layers of vegetation, water features, and biodiversity-supporting habitats, demonstrating how built environments can actively contribute to ecological regeneration.
At the heart of the proposal is a multi-level atrium that functions as both a social gathering space and a thriving ecological landscape, encouraging visitors to engage directly with nature. Through immersive experiences and hands-on learning opportunities, BLOOM promotes environmental awareness while fostering stronger connections between people, food systems, and local biodiversity.
The project challenges conventional educational architecture by proposing a future where buildings do not merely minimize environmental impact but actively restore and enrich the ecosystems around them."
