Lumiway

    Project Description

Lumiway is a cancer care center designed specifically for young patients, addressing the unique emotional and psychological challenges they face. Unlike conventional facilities that often cater to older individuals, Lumiway supports younger patients navigating illness alongside fears of the future, social isolation, anxiety, and depression. Many feel caught between withdrawing from reality and staying connected to society. Lumiway bridges this divide, creating a space that is both introspective and inclusive.

Located at the Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre, the site offers a powerful duality: the front connects to a lively urban context with access to hospitals, housing, and amenities, promoting social integration. The rear opens to serene natural elements like Yishun Pond and greenery, providing retreat and quietude. This balance allows patients to control their level of engagement with the world around them.

Lumiway’s design is structured as a spatial storytelling experience that mirrors the emotional phases of healing. The center is composed of five blocks, each corresponding to a therapeutic stage: curiosity (Cancer Boutique), spiritual guidance (Mental Health Zone), calm and relief (Bathing Spa), empowerment (Art & Craft Workshop), and fulfillment (Library Café). These spaces are not just symbolic—they are intentionally designed to support specific mental, emotional, and physical needs.

The architecture employs biophilic and phenomenological design principles, using light, materiality, and natural forms to create a multisensory healing environment. Every detail is crafted to help patients feel safe, seen, and empowered.

Lumiway transforms cancer care from a clinical process into a narrative of healing and hope. By combining supportive programming with emotionally intelligent design, it offers young cancer patients a dignified and uplifting experience—lighting a path forward through care, creativity, and connection to life.
