Resisting Censorship in Hong Kong

    Project Description

Despite being labelled as Asia’s World City, due to the “One Country, Two Systems” framework, Hong Kong is know to be a city with a history of conflict. Due to civil unrest, the city of autonomy is one whereby the civilians are consistently leaving; both digitally and physically (traces of unrest in the city - old versus new, traces
of suppression and resistance).

As the project developed, I found myself making a catalogue of these moments in the city, creating an archive of palimpsests, as Hong Kong tries to scrub and censor itself, the people find ways to remember.
My project involves mapping and identifying these moments, and the idea of collective memory - in a city where power is so determined to erase, how does architecture instead inform?

Keywords: collective memory, palimpsests, censorship paradox
