    Project Description

The revamped library, located on the site of the current Public Library of Ang Mo Kio—one of the most elderly-populated residential areas—aims to minimize dementia risk among seniors by keeping their minds active and facilitating intergenerational interactions. Key features include spaces for cognitive stimulation with puzzles and brain-training activities, as well as programs designed to foster connections between generations. The library is accessible to all ages and acts as a linkway to many facilities in the area. One of the entrances leads to a café that serves as a community hub and waiting area for the nearby polyclinic, and another connects to a bus stop and an upcoming BTO building.

Inspired by the layers of a banana tree, the design features wrapping and overlapping levels that highlight a central fitness area capable of hosting mini-events. This architectural form reflects the strength and resilience of a banana tree through its layered structure, creating a sense of openness and connectivity. These levels encourage movement and exploration, guiding users naturally through the space.

As patrons navigate the library, they encounter interconnected areas for both quiet contemplation and vibrant social interactions. The central fitness area serves as a focal point for engaging both elderly and younger visitors, promoting physical activity and cognitive health while facilitating intergenerational programming. The design also accommodates volunteer opportunities for youth, especially through initiatives like "Values in Action". Young volunteers can facilitate activities that stimulate cognitive function, fostering meaningful connections between generations. The library becomes a place for
storytelling sessions, allowing elderly patrons to share wisdom and experiences, enriching both their lives and those of younger audiences.

Intergenerational exchanges are complimented by the library’s community-focused layout, featuring accessible entry points that connect to the café—a welcoming hub for all ages. The café reinforces the library’s role as a community center.

In essence, the library's design and programming reflects a commitment to fostering mental and physical well-being across generations. By creating an engaging environment where seniors can share experiences whilst youths can contribute and volunteer, the library cultivates a vibrant community that supports lifelong learning and positive social interactions. This thoughtful interplay between architecture, community activities, and user experience enhances the quality of life for all its patrons.
